Nerve was the first track we cut for NO ANESTHESIA. It was the first time recording everything in my home studio, Rubber Chicken, and I really didn’t know how it was going to go. I knew we had good instruments and amps (Mike, Dan, and I are all gear head/guitar collectors), and that I had assembled a nice collection of different microphones, but I just wasn’t sure what I could do with my rudimentary studio set up, and I had never recorded the drum kit in my studio before. I was; however, excited about the song, which was freshly written after I was obsessively listening to Tom Petty’s “Listen to Her Heart” I really wanted to write a song like that! I had also just picked up my first Rickenbacker (a six string 620), which I wrote the chord progression on. Lyrically, I just started writing this story about someone trapped in an abusive relationship that needed a little help getting out of it from someone else that really loved her. Someone that didn’t want to control her with money and abuse and was willing to talk to the guy that did. This song is one of my favorites on the record.
lyrics
You got a lot of nerve, telling her how to run her life. You got a lot nerve, that’s right…
I’m gonna watch and learn, as you crash and burn. She doesn’t have to take it anymore.
You’re money won’t bail you out, whenever you scream and shout.
That paper tiger has lost its roar.
And you got a lot of nerve, telling her how to run her life. You got a lot nerve, that’s right…
You’ll get what you deserve. All that’s wrong will soon be right; tables are gonna turn tonight
All the bags are packed, she’s not coming back. You’re on your own, she’s out the door.
You took it way too far-she knows just who YOU are!
All this time, just talking trash.
And you got a lot of nerve, telling her how to run her life. You got a lot nerve, that’s right…
You’ll get what you deserve. All that’s wrong will soon be right; tables are gonna turn tonight
I heard you put her down-talk to her like a clown. How could you treat someone like that?
A victim of your abuse, she now knows the truth.
She’s coming home with me tonight!
And you got a lot of nerve, telling her how to run her life. You got a lot nerve, that’s right…
You’ll get what you deserve. All that’s wrong will soon be right; tables are gonna turn tonight!
Tonight! Tonight!

Like most songs on the album this song shifts between two distinct modes that work great separately, but when they combine, they become Voltron and are unstoppable! bradykoch
