Pieces of Eight are songs and this one is a tribute to a band I love (the Smithereens) and their singer, Pat Dinizio, who passed away in 2017 at the far too young age of 62. Sonically, the guitar sounds are modeled after the sound they had during their super successful run of hits in the 80’s and 90’s. Dan and I both used some super cranked up Vox amps and Mike came up with a stellar Rickenbacker bass line. Hector’s drumming isn’t too shabby, either! There are all kinds of lyrical allusions to Smithereen’s songs and album titles throughout the song. This one is now our set closer and it just plain rocks.
lyrics
Pieces of eight, from my shattered treasure chest of songs.
I can relate… every tale, suburban love gone wrong.
Grinding it out, even when there was no one there.
Now that you’re gone, I wonder who’s still around that even cares?
You disappeared, but your voice was always in my head.
Up through the years, all those teenage dreams that now are dead.
That sadness was sweet, bringing me down, only to lift me up!
It’s stuck on repeat. Over and over again, let’s blow it up!
It’s only a memory for me to keep…
The sound still comes to me, somewhere behind the wall of sleep.

So many great songs, so much great playing. Tavern at the End of the World is just one song, this is an album you must listen to and experience all the way through. Rob Moss

Like most songs on the album this song shifts between two distinct modes that work great separately, but when they combine, they become Voltron and are unstoppable! bradykoch
